Back to Q&ALow FODMAP

What's a Low FODMAP diet, and how do I start?

So, you're curious about Low FODMAP eating? That's great. It's a way of eating that cuts back on certain carbs that some people find hard to digest. These carbs are called FODMAPs. That's short for Fermentable Oligosaccharides, Disaccharides, Monosaccharides, And Polyols. Basically, they're sugars that gut bacteria enjoy, but they can cause gas, bloating, and other not-so-fun stuff. If you're in North Dallas and have gut issues, this could really help.

Identifying High and Low FODMAP Foods

First, you need to know which foods are high and low in FODMAPs. High FODMAP foods include things like garlic, onions, apples, honey, wheat, and dairy like milk and yogurt. Low FODMAP foods are rice, oats, bananas, oranges, carrots, spinach, and lactose-free dairy. You can find lots of lists online. Try keeping a food diary for a week. Write down what you eat and how you feel afterward. This can help you spot problem foods. When I cook for hillsmeal, I always use low FODMAP ingredients for these meals.

Easing Into the Low FODMAP Diet

It's better to take it easy at first. Don't cut out all high FODMAP foods right away. Start by switching out one or two high FODMAP foods for low FODMAP options. For example, use chives instead of onions, or choose lactose-free milk instead of regular milk. After a few weeks, you can cut out more foods and see how you feel. After cutting them out for a few weeks, slowly add high FODMAP foods back in, one at a time, to see which ones bother you. It's a good idea to talk to a dietician about this, but you can start by doing some research.

The Bottom Line

A Low FODMAP diet can really help with gut problems, especially if you're in Celina, TX or around North Dallas. Start by learning about high and low FODMAP foods, then slowly cut out the high FODMAP ones. A dietician can give you personalized advice. And hillsmeal has tasty and easy Low FODMAP meals to make things even easier.
